CBRN Detection
CBRN stands for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazards. Detecting them rapidly and reliably is essential for protecting people and for implementing appropriate protective measures.

CBRN Detection
CBRN stands for chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear hazardous substances that can be released as a result of accidents or due to terrorist or military actions. The goal of CBRN detection is to identify such hazardous materials early and reliably. For example, this enables the prompt cordoning off and cleaning of affected surfaces (decontamination) to prevent the hazardous material from spreading further.
Key aspects of CBRN detection are:
- Rapid on-site detection of hazardous substances to immediately initiate appropriate protective measures and countermeasures
- Reliable identification of hazardous substances as the basis for appropriate protective and treatment measures
- Ease of use in the field, even by first responders without specialized laboratory equipment
- Broad detection range, particularly for highly toxic substances such as nerve agents
In the chemical CBRN field, highly toxic substances such as nerve agents (e.g., VX, Novichok) play a central role. Even in very small quantities, these substances pose a significant health risk and require appropriate therapeutic measures to be initiated rapidly — such as the administration of specific antidotes.
CBRN detection helps emergency responders to make informed decisions in time-critical situations and to implement suitable protective measures.
Our Contribution to CBRN Detection
Dr. Franz Köhler Chemie GmbH offers an easy-to-use and highly sensitive detection kit that allows users to determine on-site within minutes whether surfaces are contaminated with nerve agents. The kit is designed for first responders and specialized emergency personnel — such as those in the German Bundeswehr, fire departments, police, and disaster response agencies — and quickly provides a reliable basis for deciding on further actions.
A kit for testing water samples for selected hazardous chemicals is currently under development.
